The Pebble Meditation is a practice that was developed during a children’s retreat held in the U.S. by Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist. The gong at the beginning and end is a recording of Thich Nhat Hanh striking a gong before a lecture in 2009. The meditation is narrated by Leigh Hopkins.
This meditation is often used to teach meditation to children, and it’s also a beautiful centering meditation technique for adults.
To practice the Pebble Meditation, you will need to find 4 small pebbles. Place them in your lap or on a tabletop in front of you. Begin by breathing quietly, listening to the sound of the gong.
The first pebble represents a flower.
The second pebble represents a mountain.
The third pebble represents water.
The fourth pebble represents space.
If you enjoyed this meditation, you can do this practice on your own, extending the amount of time between each pebble to create a longer meditation.
